Point load

The maximum recommended load capacity of a barbell only applies under optimal circumstances. Exercises that incorporate a wide grip, such as bench presses, theoretically allow for the highest possible load capacity of the barbell. When narrowing the grip, such as with deadlifts and squats, the point of load shifts towards the center of the barbell, which considerably lowers the maximum load capacity of the barbell.

The table below gives an overview of the true approximate load capacity of barbells by Authentic Barbells under different circumstances. An explanation of the different grips and exercises can be found in the scheme at the bottom of this page.

Different grips and exercises

The graphic below demonstrates different types of grips and exercises that are used for different exercises such as bench pressing, deadlifting and squatting. The width of the grip has a direct effect on the load capacity of the barbell.
